Barbershop STEAM Program Proposal
Culturally Relevant STEAM and Grooming Program Utilizing CSDT.org
I. Introduction & Overview
The Barcos Foundation proposes a unique **Barbershop STEAM Program** at the Farwell Recreation Center. This initiative will engage barber volunteers in a community-focused learning and service environment, leveraging the power of **Culturally Situated Design Tools (CSDT.org)** to teach identity-based STEAM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
Registration Forms (Internal Use)
These forms are used to manage participant and volunteer registration details, including contact and emergency information.
This program aligns perfectly with the City of Detroit Parks & Recreation's commitment to community engagement and skill development, echoing the spirit of successful programs like the Youth Hair Braiding and Nail Art classes.
II. Program Components
Identity-Based STEAM Learning
Barber volunteers will utilize CSDT.org to learn STEAM concepts integrated with the cultural practices of their craft (e.g., geometric principles in haircut design, chemical properties of grooming products).
Professional Grooming Tips & Techniques
Focused workshops led by experienced barbers on advanced grooming techniques, sanitation, client consultation, and business skills.
Grooming Services for Community
Volunteers will offer free or low-cost grooming services (haircuts, line-ups, shaves) to Farwell Rec Center patrons, particularly youth and seniors.
Volunteer Participation Incentives
Volunteers will receive incentives such as gift cards for supplies, certificates of service, or exclusive Barcos Foundation gear for their commitment.
III. Scheduling & Logistics
We propose an initial **8-week pilot program**, similar in structure to other successful Detroit Parks & Recreation classes.
- **Location:** Farwell Recreation Center
- **Target Group:** Barcos Foundation Barber Volunteers
- **Suggested Day/Time:** Monday or Friday evening (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM) or a Saturday afternoon. (Flexible based on center availability).
- **Required Space:** A multi-purpose room or designated space with adequate lighting, access to electrical outlets, and surfaces suitable for temporary barber stations.
IV. Required Support
To ensure a smooth and successful program, the Barcos Foundation requests support in the following areas:
- **Scheduling & Space Allocation:** Confirming a recurring time slot and reserving the necessary space for the 8-week duration.
- **Marketing & Outreach:** Assistance in promoting the community service portion of the program to center patrons and the wider community.
- **Basic Setup:** Access to tables and chairs for the learning component and the service stations.
V. Next Steps
The Barcos Foundation is eager to partner with the Farwell Recreation Center to bring this innovative program to life. We believe this collaboration will be a model for integrating cultural practices with STEAM education and valuable community service.
